Why did you choose to enter the profession of College Admissions?: While I was in college, I had the opportunity to work with many inner city high school students through student teaching and community service. Since many of the students that I worked with knew very little about the college admissions process, I tried to help them apply to colleges. As a result, I became an Admissions Counselor at my alma mater, so I could help students with the college admissions process and bring my knowledge back to the community.
Favorite Animal?: An elephant.
Why did you choose to work for Johns Hopkins?: I wanted to work at Johns Hopkins because it is a place that values individuality in the college admissions process, academically and professionally. It is an atmosphere that truly encourages students to explore and grow. Also, I love Baltimore City.
What do you enjoy most about your job?: My favorite part of the job is to see students that I have admitted to Hopkins become active contributors and leaders on campus. They are all doing such amazing things like starting new school groups, volunteering in the community, directing plays, running student organizations, studying abroad, conducting research, and doing internships.
How do you approach reading an application?: I approach each application thinking first about how a particular student will contribute to the campus community and then I examine their overall academic abilities and attributes.
When not reading applications, what do you do for fun?: I love spending time with my husband, daughter, family, and friends. Also, I enjoy doing yoga, hiking, swimming and spending time at our cabin in the woods.
What are your Admissions pet peeves? (What drives you crazy?): My biggest pet peeve is when a student photocopies every single certificate or award he or she has ever won and attaches them the application. It is unnecessary.
Favorite College Essay?: A few years ago, a student wrote about his day at the laundry mat. He went to the laundry mat to wash his clothes. He invited his girlfriend there to have a date while washing his clothes. He talked about the happenings of the day including ladies gossiping and a dog getting off his leash and running wild through the laundry mat. It was a very humorous essay and I learned a lot about this student's personality.
What three things would you want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?: My family, dogs, and friends.
A special treat for you all next week. Two more profiles, including one of the main authors of the Hopkins Insider blog...
