I have returned from a mini-vacation and will be in the office for a bit of time until my next mini-vacation. That is the great plan for the summer - mini-vacations dispersed between a more relaxed work schedule where I actually get to think, brainstorm, and plan, while also accomplishing all those items still remaining on my grand task list. Though I love application reading, recruitment travel, and the other components of being an Admissions Counselor, my truly favorite part of working in higher education is the relaxed summer schedules.
But before summer can officially begin, I have a various numbers of updates to pass along to the variety of audiences who actually read this blog. (((Tangent coming ---> Speaking of that, are there any people who actually read this??? I sometimes wonder, especially since there are so few people using the comments section. To those commenting, I enjoy chatting with you. To those not using the comments please do so -- just so I can alleviate my concern that the only people reading this blog are my family and some colleagues.))) OK, back to the point of this entry...a lot has transpired since the May 1 enrollment deadline so here are updates for all of you. Just pick the group you are in and read on - (1) Wait List Students; (2) Enrolling Students; (3) Transfer Applicants; and (4) Prospective Students.
Update For Wait List Students
Earlier this week, the Counseling team met with the Director of Admissions and began the discussion of enrolling class size and the wait list. It is important to note that NO FINAL DECISIONS have yet to be made, and this discussion will continue for the next couple of weeks. We will be quite deliberate in our process, taking a look at the whole picture and not making any quick decisions.
As a staff we will continue to discuss these issues and hope to have final decisions by the end of the month. Once we have reached a decision, all students who selected to remain on the wait list will be notified by mail or email. Many of you will have questions and want to know your decisions as soon as possible -- unfortunately we need to have time to weigh many factors. There is nothing you need to do at this time, but just be patient.
Once again, I repeat we have not made any final decisions on the wait list and will update you all by the end of the month. Feel free to post any questions in the comments section if you need clarification.
Update For Enrolling Students (The Class of 2010)
On May 15th we launched a brand new message board just for the enrolling members of the Class of 2010. You all should have received the web address through an email invitation on Tuesday as well as a blue postcard in your enrollment confirmation mailing. This is our second year with a summer message board for incoming freshman, and if you all use it as much as last year's class you will know a lot about your classmates before move-in on September 1 & 2.
Use this forum as a way to meet your future classmates and also as a central place to ask questions about getting ready for Hopkins. Throughout the summer many updates will also be posted on the message boards (as well as random polls) so check back frequently.
I am personally looking forward to checking out the discussions on the forum this summer as I am excited to see all the amazing qualities of our incoming class. Plus, I am on the look-out for freshmen bloggers - but more will follow on that later this summer.
Update For Transfer Applicants
The Transfer review committee is in the midst of reviewing all the transfer applications and plan to release decisions by the end of the month. The transfer applicant pool is close to 700 applications this year, which is a noticeable jump from previous years. Discussions are still on-going about how many transfer applicants will be offered admission and will continue up until the point decisions are released.
Sorry I do not have much more to say about transfers, but unfortunately I do not sit on that committee nor do I work with transfers much. All I can add is that my colleagues involved with the transfer review process are hard at work and will get decisions out as soon as they feel comfortable with the final review of the complete pool of applicants. Just like with the wait list students, you all need to have just a bit more patience.
Update For Prospective Students (Classes of 2011 and beyond)
I hope you all enjoyed reading about my misadventures on the road a couple of weeks ago. (If not, check back to read my "On the Road" entries). As I stated in one of those posts, the Hopkins Insider will now primarily be directing entries to you.
It is an exciting time to be a prospective student, as the high school year comes to an end and the grand slate of the college search begins. I hope you will visit this blog periodically throughout the summer as I will be posting every couple of weeks with updates, tips, and advice I feel prospective students will want to read about.
But, to make this blog as useful as possible I am reaching out to all of you for assistance. Here is your task: Use the comments section of this blog to make suggestions about future Hopkins Insider topics. I will go through the list and choose some of the more interesting suggestions to become future blog entries. Suggest anything!!!
Updates complete! All the best to you blog readers. I am off to ponder what will happen on LOST tonight...Cheers.
