What's up? My name is Ramy, and I'm a first generation Egyptian. That said, I'm usually asked a bunch of questions, which, depending on my audience, have included: "Do you speak Arabic?" "Did you live in a pyramid?" and "Do you worship cows?" Well, the answer to one of those questions is yes, but I'll keep you guessing as to which it is.
So, a little more about me: I'm currently (or at least intend to be) a pre-med neuroscience major, and my eventual goal is to be a reconstructive plastic surgeon. I have also been a digital artist for 6 years, so in the future you might see some of my stuff posted here if I work on anything interesting.
What better way to start than with pictures of my typical night at Hopkins? Too bad I haven't yet had a "typical" night. So instead, here are some pictures of my friends and I hanging out in front of a grocery store after watching "The Black Dahlia" (which I don't recommend, by the way).
Before you start thinking I'm crazy (which I very well might be), I want to tell you about my introduction to Hopkins. When I came to Hopkins three weeks ago, I did not know what to expect. I can’t say I did a great job learning about student life, and I, like many others, chose to come for the typical pre-med, rigorous academic reputation of Hopkins. Plus, the campus was really nice. Win-win, right?
My first day at Hopkins, it was raining. Hard. I am not a real outdoorsy person, and so my plans were to stay in my room quietly, maybe hook up my internet connection and go online, set up my room a little, you know, boring, typical first day stuff.
Well, if you didn’t notice my use of the word typical yet, I am pointing it out now. That is all I expected, and that’s what I thought I wanted. That’s when I got a knock on my door, from 2 other students living in my building, who were going around introducing themselves at each door. For a brief 3 seconds, I was sure that I would just go back to my desk, but then it hit me that this was my chance to jumpstart my college experience. I decided to follow them, and ended up meeting all 130 residents in my building.
When I got back to my room, my roommate asked me to come outside and play frisbee. Did I mention that it was raining hard? Well, it took a little bit of persuading me, especially since I had never played frisbee before in my life, but I agreed and we went outside. After a few minutes of tossing the frisbee around the freshman quad, we were already soaked, but a bunch of people kept asking to join, and we eventually had enough for a 5 on 5 game of Ultimate. By the end of it, I was covered in mud from head to toe, and it was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had.
I've realized that there are opportiunities to do virtually anything at Hopkins, and it's hard to miss them. They so often punch you in the face (quite literally, in the case of martial arts classes at the rec center). So maybe I haven't answered why I hung out at a grocery store for three hours on a Friday night, but I think I'll save that story for another day. For now, a poster sale calls. My roommate has been telling me to get posters since I got here, because my side of the room is still bare. Maybe I'll post pictures when I fill it up...
